delayed gratification: the new age of thrift
Delayed gratification, the new age of thrift is here. It's now considered bad manners to overspend and overindulge.
Just a few years ago if someone said to me that I would practice delayed gratification I would have laughed. Now though, I get that “shoppers high” when I pass on the impulse buys and watch my savings grow. Another great side effect - no more shoppers guilt!
Through my own journey to frugality I found something I didn’t even realize I was searching for - security. There is something about being mindful of your money that really grounds you in reality and helps mold who you are or who you want to be.
being frugal doesn’t mean your cheap quite the opposite, being frugal really means you are wise.
I understand now, what I didn’t then, that finding the best prices, saving our money and leading by example is the best gift that I can give my children. Will the economy change? Yes, change is the one constant that we always have. Will I change back to that free spending, overindulged, non-economical wife and mother? No, for me I’ve learned my lesson and it may have taken me oh, I don’t know (ahem, cough, cough) a few years, but I understand now that being frugal doesn’t mean your cheap quite the opposite, being frugal really means you are wise.
Helpful Tips for Being Frugal
Ask yourself before you buy anything - Do I need this?
Wash your laundry in cold water
Hang your clothes to dry. Some HOA’s won’t allow you to hang your clothes outside so get creative and create a place indoors.
Eat at home more - Time to pull out the pots and pans
Do the treasure drive - Rescue salvageable pieces that others have thrown to the curb. There’s a reason they say “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”
Buy only what is on sale
Set it and forget it - (your thermostat) 60-62°F during Fall and Winter - 76-78°F during Spring and Summer
Maintain a household budget
