preparing for the holidays all year
I love to prepare all year for Christmas. Waiting until the last minute to buy gifts means that I over spend, have a lot of guilt, and don't enjoy Christmas.
Last year, for my kids (at that time they were 15, 17 and 18) I decided to limit my gift giving to four gifts per person. This is known as the The Jesus Gifts. I loved it! I was able to put a lot more time and thought into the gifts, which meant I was really connecting with who my children are and they loved it, too.
The Jesus Gifts
Gold was a gift fit for a king. (a gift they will cherish)
Frankincense was used at prayer times to visually remind people that their prayers rose up to God. (a gift for their mind and soul)
Myrrh is an imbalming spice, reminding us that the Lord came to experience a human life and to die a human death. (a fun gift - reminder of all the wonders of our lives)
Swaddling Clothes were a gift from his parents to take care of his needs. (a gift they need)
I am always on the lookout for great deals and checking the clearance racks etc. I am able to get awesome gifts for pennies on the dollars.
Tips for shopping all year:
Put together a list of all of the people that you will be buying gifts for and keep this list w/you: - You’ll find that they will mention things throughout the year that they would love. Write these down under their name. That way if you are out and about and find a really good deal on the item (clearance etc.) you’ll be able to get it and mark it off of your list. There aren’t that many clearance sales around the holidays .
Decide on how much you want to spend on gifts for each person. Budget = holiday enjoyment. For example: I have a large family (4 sisters and 2 brothers - plus their spouses and all of my neices and nephews) I like to spend under $5.00 per person (yes under $5.00.) This may sound like a small amount and if I waited until the holidays rolled around to start shopping it would be (and they wouldn’t get anything) - however, because I am always on the lookout for great deals and checking the clearance racks. I am able to get awesome gifts for pennies on the dollars. You’ll be surprised at how far five dollars can go and how many treasured family memories you’ll make without breaking the bank
